Books, The Best Gift to Send to Whom You Love

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

If you are not sure what type of gift to give to a young adult, try giving a young adult book. Books make wonderful gift ideas.  You can purchase young adult books at any major retail bookstore. The Internet is a wonderful resource for saving money if you know where to look, and books are one of the easiest items to save on, since you never have to worry about fit or color or style. There are many sources for cheap books online, and they are especially valuable for purchasing young adult books.

Young adults outgrow reading levels and interests so quickly that it seems a shame to pay full price for books that will most likely be read once and then discarded. By locating cheap books online through new and used booksellers, you can minimize the expense of keeping up with a young adult’s changing interests and provide a wide and ever-changing variety of reading material to keep your teen’s interests engaged.

Young adult books are generally written for audiences between the ages of 12 and 18, and deal with themes and topics that are especially relevant to teens. They are usually short to medium length chapter books addressing things like coming of age, dating, friendship, and fitting in, and can provide a means of understanding their own experiences as well as entertainment to the teen reader.

Because young adult books are read at specific ages and then outgrown, used young adult books are abundant. Few people keep young adult books once their children have reached adulthood, and the Internet provides an easy forum for buying and selling used books. From free book swapping sites to online retailers, there are many outlets that offer cheap books online, especially if you’re looking for young adult books.

Some popular sources for cheap books online are Amazon.com, Half.com and EBay. At all three, you can find used young adult books at a fraction of retail costs. If you prefer new books, don’t worry. Discount retailers like Overstock.com and the online outlets of major booksellers like Barnes and Noble offer new books at a discount from list prices. Be sure to consider shipping costs when looking for cheap books online, because sometimes what appears to be the best price is actually more expensive after shipping costs. Major online retailers frequently offer free shipping for larger orders, so be sure to be aware of store policies. Sometimes buying more can cost less!

Trade Paperbacks

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

Trade paperbacks are, perhaps, among the most popular books sold today.  Since they are often sold at a lower cost than hazrd cover books, they are often available at a wider variety of stores.

Many book collectors also acquire several trade paperbacks from the same author, and they have become widely sought after.  But just what is a trade paperback?

A trade paperback book is characterized by its shape, which is much like that of a hardcover.  This sets it apart from a mass market paperback, which is usually proportioned so that it is smaller in size, but thicker in height.

A trade paperback, or (TPB), is sometimes called to as a trade paper edition, and can refer to any book that is bound with a heavy paper cover that is generally cheaper to bind than a hardcover book.

This is still cheaper to bind than a mass market paperback, but this is to be expected since mass market paperbacks are usually produced and sold rather cheaply in a number of stores including supermarkets and some convenient stores.

Traditionally, trade paperbacks were printed as special editions of a book, and were promoted as such at the time of release.  Many of these special editions are now collectable items, and some are very difficult to find.

More recently, however, trade paperbacks are replacing regular paperbacks once the hardcover edition has been released.  This is especially the case with many literary titles.  Generally, pocket-sized paperbacks are now used only for popular and genre fiction.

For writers who are being published for the first time, a trade paperback may be the sole format of the release of their first book.  This can help writers because the cost of producing this edition is cheaper than it would be to release a hardcover edition from an unknown writer.

In the comic book genre, trade paperbacks are usually used to print several editions of a comic series, usually an important story line or the entire series itself.

Many trade paperbacks are now sold on the Internet, which is especially important for avid book collectors who are looking for that rare edition that is long out-of-print.  Here, both companies and individuals can sell these popular products, and it gives those seeking a specific title or edition the opportunity to obtain more extensive buying information.

Though trade paperbacks are now produced more frequently than they once were, they haven’t lost their novelty or popularity with fans and collectors alike.  So, if you are looking for that book that is less expensive than a hardcover, but more expensive than a mass market paperback, a trade paperback may be the answer.

Religious Books

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

Religious books are a general term that covers many books from any religion that has a book published on a train of thought that originates with that particular philosophy. Usually at first glance the first thought that comes to mind when talking about religious books has been books on Judea Christianity. However, that is no longer the case. With our culture moving more towards globalization we find that the common American is interacting with different cultures much more and through that interaction a general curiosity is met about the theology of these cultures.

This is where religious books come in useful. Sometimes it is awkward to ask someone details about their life. There is the possibility that one can come off as being rude and disrespectful. Religious books that are available through different religious organizations and at various bookstores can answer the common and at times not so common questions held by people. As well the religious book genre can aid those people who are looking for a new religious pathway but do not know where to turn.

Typically looking at the organization of books in bookstores (which is typically the same) there is the Judeo-Christianity section. This aisle typically consists of books on the subject of the various forms of Christianity and Judaism. Many bookstores also include a separate section for Islam now. For religious books on topics such as Hindu, Buddhism etc. they will typically be found under eastern philosophy. Other New age religions such as Wicca can be found in the New Age section.

Other than bookstores specific religious books can be purchased through the religious organization itself. Going through the specific religious organization allows the average shopper to find the book of their choice that may be a bit more direct and along the lines of what it is that they are looking to read.

Another genre that religious books cover is the self-help venues. There are many books that are available to help out with various situations from a specific philosophical point of view. There are typically if there is an emotional problem then there is a religious book that can solve it for. Whether a person is Christian, Hindu or Pagan there is something to help them through it.

The religious book genre is ever growing and changing with the times. The genre has grown dramatically and is a benefit to those people that are followers to the faith. As well it helps those that are interested in finding new pathways for themselves and those that are just curious.

Children’s Books

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

Board books are often a child’s first introduction to the world of print. Designed with infants and toddlers in mind, these specialty children’s books are chunky, with thick, study pages perfect for a young child’s exploring touch. Like most children’s books, board books are usually labeled with a target age range by the publisher. Board books are generally intended for children from birth to three years old.

Early children’s books come in many titles. Many classics of children’s literature are available in board book format, from the works of Dr. Seuss to bedtime staples like Goodnight Moon. These titles allow even the very youngest children to enjoy the whimsical stories and colorful illustrations of favorite stories without worry about torn pages.

Pocket sized board books often come in themed collections. Favorite children’s characters often star in collections of board books, which often come in creative packaging, intended to make getting the books out and putting them away just as much fun for your child as reading them. Other collections focus on a theme, such as letters of the alphabet.

Perhaps the most popular style of board book is the simple picture book. Each heavy, cardboard page contains a single word or concept, paired with a matching illustration. Available on subjects from dinosaurs and cars to colors and shapes, these children’s books build familiarity with basic early learning concepts and introduce the idea that words represent things we see around us.

Board books come in a range of different sizes. Small, pocket sized board books are perfect for crawling infants who are just learning to manipulate objects, while larger books are ideal for the toddler who wants a book just like Mommy’s.

The physical construction of board books is designed to withstand the rough treatment of children too young to know better. Unlike traditional bound paper books, the thick cardboard pages of board books are virtually indestructible. They resist tearing and make it easier for clumsy young fingers to turn pages.

Board books are also an exceptionally affordable addition to the family library.  Small full color picture books are often priced at just a few dollars per title, while larger, full size full color books are priced around the same as hardcover children’s books. Building a collection of board books for the child in you life is an inexpensive way to provide an early introduction to the importance and enjoyment of reading.

Bargain book Section

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

Bargain books used to be a resigned for specialty stores dealing with that genre only. However, with in the past ten to fifteen years the majority of bookstores have become superstores that have a wide variety of books available for the average reader. From specialty recipe books to classic literature the majority of these books can be found in these bookstores. The result of this is that these books will end up in the Bargain bookshelves when they have not been sold.

Just because a book is labeled as a bargain book it doesn’t mean that it will not be a good find for any personal library. The majority of bargain books are excess stocks that have not been fully sold out. These books then must be cleared so that newer stock that has been purchased can have their equal space on the shelves. Many times interesting unique books can be found amongst the more common books found. Looking through the Bargain books section of a bookstore is like looking for a hidden jewel amongst a plethora of ordinary media. This is not to say that most of the books in the bargain book section are run of the mill but one must take into consideration the old saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

Bargain books have become quite the trendy commodity in bookstores. The result of this is that some specialty books go straight to the bargain section where they are more likely to get more customers walking by them and viewing them than in the regular sections they would otherwise belong in. This means more money in the pockets of the bookstore. For example a book with Images of WW II is not necessarily a book that someone would purposely go to a bookstore for. However when shopping for holidays such as father’s day. The book in question being displayed in the bargain book section may just catch the eye of that shopper and they may purchase it for a gift.

The bargain book section is a great place to look for presents for those people on the shopping list that have just about everything. Specialty books that have been displayed in the Bargain book section may give the average shopper an opportunity to purchase them for that hard to shop for loved one that is on their list.

The Bargain section of a bookstore is also a wonderful means for a new book that has been published by a certain author to be showcased. Many times it is much easier to find a book by a particular author in the bargain section than it is to find them on the shelves of the store.

So do not count out the bargain book section of the bookstore. There is much to be found there and contrary to popular belief it certainly is not tacky to be found browsing the shelves of that section.
